This blog is operated by Chris Roush, who teaches “Newswriting,” “Business Reporting,” “Economics Reporting,” and “Business and the Media” at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as the Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Scholar in business journalism. Roush is also director of the Carolina Business News Initiative, which offers a certificate in business journalism for undergraduate students and training for professionals.

Roush is the author of “Show Me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication,” a business reporting textbook published by Routledge, and “Profits and Losses: How Business Journalism Shaped Society,” a book published by Marion Street Press. He is the co-author of “The SABEW Stylebook,” a business journalism stylebook published by Marion Street Press.

Roush worked as a business reporter for The Sarasota Herald-Tribune, The Tampa Tribune and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has also worked for BusinessWeek in its Connecticut bureau and for Bloomberg News in its Atlanta bureau. In addition, he was editor-in-chief of a company in Charlottesville, Va., that published magazines such as Thrift Investor, Insurance Investor and Bank Mergers & Acquisitions. He wrote a monthly sports business column for Business North Carolina for three years as well.

Roush is friends with many people in business journalism, including many people mentioned or quoted on Talking Biz News. His former students also currently work in business journalism at places such as Bloomberg News, Reuters, The Associated Press business news desk, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, Business Insider, the Sports Business Journal, the Dayton Business Journal, the Nashville Business Journal, the business desks of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Charlotte Observer, and CNBC.com. His former students have also interned and/or worked for the Triangle Business Journal, Triad Business Journal, Atlanta Business Chronicle, Jacksonville (Fla.) Business Journal, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Bond Buyer, the Pacific Coast Business Journal, the Los Angeles Business Journal and others.

He wrote about Rupert Murdoch’s purchase of Dow Jones & Co. for Slate.com in 2007, and he has written two columns for The (Raleigh) News & Observer. He has also appeared several times on CNBC.

In addition, Roush was once on the board of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. He also serves as the executive director of the College Business Journalism Consortium, a loosely affiliated group of universities that promote business journalism education and hold an annual conference for students interested in business journalism careers.
