Kim Quillen, the former business editor at The New Orleans Times-Picayune, has been hired as an assistant business editor at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix.

Quillen lost her job in New Orleans last year when the parent company, Newhouse, stopped publishing print newspapers seven days a week in some markets.

Quillen tells Talking Biz News she will start on Jan. 22. She will report to business editor Kathy Tulumello and oversee Arizona economy coverage; energy and watchdog enterprise reporting; and technology/innovation coverage.

Quillen, a member of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers board of directors, had been the Times-Picayune’s business editor for the past seven years, supervising reporters, planning the content of the daily and Sunday business pages, and coordinating coverage with other departments and bureaus. Before that, she was an assistant business editor for seven years.

She joined the paper in 1998 after working three years at the Delaware State News. She has a bachelor’s degree from Mary Washington College and a master’s from American University.

Quillen also contributed tips for covering small, private businesses to the business journalism textbook, “Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication.”
